Brake Repair & Maintenance

Changing Your Brakes: When and Why

Your brakes are one of the most vital components of your vehicle, and your safety technology. Not only do they help you slow down when you approach an intersection, or a stop light, they also can immediately stop your car if something appears in the road. In this way, they are extremely important for your safety on the road. Like other parts of your car, though, they can wear down over time, and after extended usage. That is why it is important to make sure your brakes are always in good condition. Here at Ivan Gandrud Nissan, our goal is to ensure that your brakes, and your vehicle in general, are ready for the road.

Signs of Failing Brakes

There are a few overt signs that your brakes are failing, or are being worn down to a concerning degree. If you become aware of any of these symptoms, we implore that you bring your vehicle in to be checked out.

  • You hear your brakes squealing, or grinding, as you slow down
  • You feel your pedal vibrating or pulsating
  • Your brakes seem to be less responsive than they used to be
  • Your brake warning light comes on
  • You notice a burning odor from your tires
As was mentioned before, it is important to bring your vehicle in to our service center if you notice any of these symptoms so that you can remain safe on the road.

When Should I Get My Brakes Repaired/Replaced?

It's hard to pin down exactly when you should change your brakes -- someone who drives in the city will have to change them out more often than someone who consistently drives in the country. However, it is usually a good rule of thumb for most vehicles to have their tires rotated in six month intervals. While you are there getting your tires rotated, you can also have your brakes checked to see if they need to be repaired or not.
