Understanding What the Symbols on Your Car’s Dashboard Mean
The rise of advanced technology and computerized systems in vehicles have illuminated your dashboard with all kinds of symbols. It’s important that you understand these indicators that reveal the state of your car and can warn you about serious problems. Here’s a list of the more common ones and what they mean.
Check Engine Light
Looking like a small motor, the Check Engine Light shows up for several reasons, such as the fuel cap is loose, the catalytic converter needs to be replaced, or oxygen sensors need changing. Beyond the obvious solution of tightening the gas cap, the only way to discover the cause and solution is to take it into a mechanic who can read the code associated with the light and diagnose the problem.
When this light is flashing, you need to take your car in immediately because your engine may be suffering from a serious problem that can become expensive if ignored.
Engine Temperature Warning
This looks like a thermometer on some waves and reveals that your engine is overheating. Pull over to a safe space and allow the engine to cool before you pop the hood. Check the coolant level and radiator cap, and look for coolant leaks. Confirm that your fan is operating correctly.
Oil Pressure Warning
This oil can is displayed to show a loss of oil pressure. You’re most likely low on oil, so check the oil level according to the instructions in your owner’s manual. Add more oil, if needed.
Battery Warning
Showing a small battery, the light comes on if your battery is not charging correctly or is losing power. The problem can be a bad battery but this could also indicate that your alternator belt is broken or that you have a bad battery cable. If it is a battery problem and you do nothing, your vehicle may no longer start.
Tire Pressure Monitoring System
Also known as TPMS, this cross-section of a tire with an exclamation point in the middle tells you that one or more of your tires is low on air. You can pull into the nearest gas station and use the tire gauge that’s built into the station air pump to check the pressure in each tire. The recommended pressure is listed in the owner’s manual or near the driver’s side door jamb. Filling the tires to the correct pressure typically turns this light off.
Anti-lock Brake Warning
Shown as the letters “ABS” surrounded by a circle, this warning reveals a problem with the Anti-lock Brake System that prevents your brakes from locking up in an emergency stop. The brake fluid in the system may be low, the ABS module may be malfunctioning, speed sensors may be broken, or you’ve turned off your ABS. Take your vehicle for a look right away. You don’t want to risk your ABS failing during a potential accident.
Traction Control
This indicator appears as a car with two skid marks and shows that the Traction Control System is on. This system prevents wheelspin by applying the brakes, so your vehicle maintains traction. It works best when you’re driving on slippery surfaces or under bad weather.
Traction Control Malfunction
This light shows up as a triangle with an exclamation point inside it, surrounded by a semi-circle with an arrow. It indicates that your Traction Control System may either have a damaged sensor or is not working. This may also light up when you have problems with the ABS, which works with traction control.
Low Fuel Level
When the symbol of a gasoline pump lights up, you’re running out of gasoline. Don’t risk trying to drive to home, work, or school, because your vehicle may stop inconveniently in the middle of traffic. It’s best to go into a gas station as soon as possible to fill up.
